Why would a husband do this?

I just dont understand why he did this or what he was thinking??? For mothers day my husband gave me a nice card but no gift (i didnt ask for nor expect anything but was suprised and pleased with the card. i love cards. im only telling you that to explain the rest of the story)... on memorial day he said..."i know i didnt get you a gift and have no right asking but Id like that as seen on tv tool for fathers day "... I said ok.... But when I tried to give it to him, he refused stating, "you cant give gifts out of obligation, you cant buy love".... I dont understand, he asked me to buy it for him. Maybe this was a set up just to hurt me? If it was it worked. What do you think?
